Once again Lynyrd Skynyrd Fans gathered together to pay tribute to Jacksonville's own Lynyrd Skynyrd Band in their hometown, Jacksonville, FL. The Rodeway Inn Conference Center continues to be our Host Hotel for the 4th year in a row & the "new" Sharky's Place is our home for the Skynyrd Tribute weekend.
HISTORY OF THE SKYNYRD TRIBUTE WEEKEND
Every year since 1993, a weekend in October has been set aside as a Skynyrd Fan Fest to honor the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band and their music. This annual event was originally created and organized by Judy & Melody Van Zant of the The Freebird Foundation until October 2000, the Freebird Foundation closed in March 2001. Artimus Pyle organized The Celebration Of Life Tribute at the St.Augustine Amphitheatre, a similar event in October 2001.
The Skynyrd Chat Frynds group has been involved with the annual tributes since 1997. Beginning October 2002, the Jacksonville based rock band, KYMYSTRY in conjunction with the Skynyrd Chat Frynds internet group at www.frynds.com has independently organized and sponsored the annual "free" fan based Skynyrd Tribute Weekend. Other "Skynyrd Fan" bands and musicians donate their time and talents to round out a full weekend of live music! In addition, there is a "Skynyrd Sytes Tour" (by caravan) scheduled on Saturday afternoon that includes a map to Skynyrd related sytes of interest. If there are not enough folks to do the Skynyrd Sytes Tour as a group, folks may do the tour on their own at their leisure using the maps provided.
The Lynyrd Skynyrd Band has touched the hearts and souls of so many through the music they created and their performances over the past 30+ years. The Skynyrd Tribute is our (the fans) way of honoring them and it's also a time for special remembrance of the "original band members" who are no longer with us... Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson, Steve Gaines and Honkette - Cassie Gaines, who gave their extraordinary talents and creativity which is responsible for the unique Lynyrd Skynyrd sound. The Lynyrd Skynyrd Band is the world famous "Greatest Southern Rock Band" of all tyme! Lynyrd Skynyrd was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13th 2006!
